My friend Brett Caudill, the worship leader at Seven24, have had a number of conversations about worship music lyrics. To be honest, they can be a little, um, girly. We both agree on this. Often I wonder if the men that attend our church feel a little bit awkward singing words like “Jesus, I am so in love with you” or “You are beautiful beyond description”. The songs themselves are great, and the lyrics are certainly glorifying to God, but that doesn’t change the fact that they are often very weird for men to sing, particularly if they are men that are new to church.
Thankfully that is not the case with all worship songs, and there are many songs that allow us to express our love and thankfulness to God in a way that doesn’t compromise our masculinity. I came across this video interview with songwriter and worship leader Matt Redman (writer of “Blessed Be Your Name”, “Facedown”, “Let My Words Be Few”, and a whole bunch of other worship classics) where he talks about the feminine nature of worship music and how we can get around that (the title of the video is “getting beyond ‘Jesus is my boyfriend’ worship”…brilliant). It’s an interesting interview, and I especially enjoyed their frequent use of the term “bloke”. We need to find a way to get that word into American vernacular.
Do any of the rest of you think this is a problem? If you’re a dude, do you ever feel awkward singing worship songs? For those of you in ministry, is this an issue at your church?
